Did you ever wonder as a child what it was like when God created you? I can’t say I remember thinking about that, but it certainly makes a great plot line for a children’s book. “When God Created My Toes” is a sweet little book about a girl who asks the question, What was it like when God made me? Scripture reveals that each person is fearfully and wonderfully made, and this book celebrates being made by Creator God.

I read this book to my son as soon as it came in the mail, and he loved it! He is almost 2 years old, and loved the rhyming and cute illustrations throughout the book. In fact, when we finished reading the book, he climbed off my lap and ran across the room with the book to ask my husband to read it again. Based on his liking of the book, I would recommend this book to families who would like to think about what it is like when God created their child (or themselves as parents). The one thing my husband and I noticed is that it is important to explain to the child that the book is about their forming in the womb, not the creation of the world. Overall, this is a very cute book that deserves a spot on every Christian family’s shelf.

*I blog with integrity, I received this book from Waterbook Multnomah in exchange for blogging about it. All opinions are mine.

Marcus Buckingham always writes books that are helpful and interesting. This one is no different. I read a good portion of this book on an airplane, and the glances I received from other women while I read proved to me that women everywhere are looking for ways to be more successful in life. Buckingham starts the book with 10 Myths abut the Lives of Women. This section alone makes the book worth a read. Each of the myths is either something I have thought about before or have heard other women in my life mention. The rest of the book is broken into three sections: Something’s Got To Give, Learn to Live Your Strongest Life, and Strong Life Tactics. I learned a lot in all three sections of the book, but my favorite was section 2, Learn to Live Your Strongest Life. In this section, the author helps women see that they can truly live a strong, successful life. Buckingham describes this kind of life as one that feels “successful,(one of) instinctive anticipation, growing and learning, and needs fulfilled”. True to Buckingham style, there is a test in the book-the Strong Life Test. Various roles women are meant to play are tested in this section.
Overall, this is a very good and practical book for any women, but especially those in the workplace who need a boost of enthusiasm for life and work.

In 2001, Afghanistan became a place of terror for a group of Shelter Now organization workers. This book, Kabul 24, covers what happened to the group of Christian workers who were captured by Taliban. The book began in an intriguing way, considering I had not done any previous reading on what happened during this time period. The workers in Afghanistan were treated very harshly during their time of imprisonment. Accounts of intense interrogations and unjust treatment help the reader to better understand what was happening to these aid workers during this time. Sadly, the book never draws the reader completely into the story, as much of the book becomes fact instead of storytelling and much of the information feels repetitive. However, the faith of these aid workers is never questioned. Their faith seemed strong and growing, even in the midst of terrible trials and injustice. As one who did not know much about what was going on during this time frame in this part of the world, I felt this was a good book to read and learn from. Perhaps other books involve more information, but this book carries with it the heart of this group of aid workers who were seeking to do the most important work they could ever do-share the Gospel with a lost and dying generation in Afghanistan.

Evil surrounds us on a daily basis, no matter where we live. The problem of evil is one that is timeless and has been the source of countless discussions throughout the ages. Is God truly good, and if so, why is there evil in the world? These are the questions Randy Alcorn takes on in his book, If God is Good.
The book is a hefty volume on the matter, similar in size and style to his work on Heaven. The book is divided into eleven sections, covering topics such as Understanding the Problem of Evil and Suffering, God’s Allowance and Restraint of Evil and Suffering, and how to live Meaningfully in Suffering.
Alcorn does a good job hitting the theological issues behind the topic of suffering and the restraint of evil. His passion to share the Scriptural viewpoint is evident throughout the book. This is a thorough anthology on the topic and one that any believer (or unbeliever) who has ever pondered this age-old question should study.
As a student of the Bible and apologetics, this book is a huge help to me in my own personal study. There is so much to be said on this subject, and Alcorn leaves no stone unturned in his search for truth. This is a book I will refer back to many times over the course of my lifetime.

After the recent news attention the homeless have received, I was intrigued to read the book “Under the Overpass”. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to give up everything you have ever known to become homeless for a while, this book will answer your questions. As a student of urban ministry and someone who seeks to speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves, I think this is a fantastic book. Mike and his counterpart experienced some hardships that are common for our homeless friends in the US. This book is a fantastic resource for anyone who wonders what it’s really like to be homeless, or who wonders how they can be involved in ministry to homeless people. I hope you read this book and are challenged to look at the problem of homelessness in a new light.

As a teen, I became very interested in books relating to what is happening to believers in the rest of the the world. Voices of the Faithful Book 1 is one of the books I picked up during that time in my life. The first book was filled with story after story of what God was doing in the lives of His people. I was convicted of my lack of faith and amazed at what was happening. So, when I saw that a book 2 was going to be released, I was thrilled.

Book 2 of Voices of the Faithful, compiled by Kim P. Davis and created by the renowned Beth Moore, brings so much more than the first book in the series. Kim found missionaries who are serving in every part of the world to write the 366 devotions featured in this book. The stories they tell are incredible and at times miraculous. Each month in the devotional is given a specific topic. These topics are: Prayer the Priority; God, Our Loving Father; Divine Appointments; Jesus, the Sacrificial Lamb; “Follow Me”; The Power of the Story; Lost and Found; Making Him Known; Lessons from the Young; From Adversity to Triumph; Be Encouraged; and Hope for the World. This set of devotions is a breath of fresh air. Each day the reader will be challenged to see what is happening in the world around them, and pray the prayer suggested for that specific day. This book could be dangerous, as reading it may radically change the life of the believer willing to allow God to work in His heart. Voices of the Faithful Book 2 should be a welcome addition to any believer’s library of devotions, but especially for those whose heart is broken for the multitude of unsaved peoples of the world.

I recently read a book entitled “The Great Eight -How to Be Happy (Even When You Have Every Reason To Be Miserable)” by Scott Hamilton. As a gold medal Olympian figure skater, Hamilton opens up in this book to share his eight happiness-producing secrets.

Scott Hamilton shares many stories and experiences from his own life in the book, which makes it much more enjoyable to read. As a young boy, Hamilton was adopted. He suffered from illness after illness, leaving both him and his parents to wonder what would become of his little life. After a time, Scott discovered that he loved to ice skate. Miraculously, the more he skated, the better off he became. His health improved along with his skating skills. The book is full of insider information about his formative years of skating and competition up into adulthood, when he suffered with testicular cancer and a terrible brain tumor.

This book is funny and witty at times, but also moving and terribly sad as you experience some of the joys and pain this Olympian has experienced in his lifetime.A gander through The Great Eight gives the reader a fresh outlook on life and a greater understanding of the man named Scott Hamilton.

Today is both a very happy and a very terrible day. Exactly one year ago, my husband and I were celebrating his birthday. We were having a wonderful day, but our hearts were heavy because both of us knew a phone call was going to come… sometime. Once that call came, it was hard to enjoy celebrating the rest of the day. Why? Well, earlier in the week a friend of ours from college ended up in critical care because he had been cleaning his gun in the middle of the night and the gun accidentally went off. The bullet hit the fireplace in his living room and whizzed back at our friend, lodging in his brain.

The call we received August 20, 2008 was to tell us that he was dead. Neither of us knew how to handle such sadness. This was a young man with so much potential, so much talent. Here we were, celebrating my husband’s life, and mourning a friend’s death at the same time. This was one of those life situations no one can ever prepare you for.

Here I am, a year later, and I still don’t know how to handle this. Even today I have struggled with the contrast in feelings that keep pouring over me. I am thrilled to be celebrating my husband’s life, especially as we look forward to the birth of our son in December. I am also heartbroken as I remember our friend who is now with the Lord. Dear, dear friends of mine had their lives completely changed when God allowed our friend to leave us all behind. I am jealous, too. He’s in heaven and the rest of us are left to deal with the pain. It’s hard to understand.

How do I deal with this day? Well, first, I thank God. Thank Him for His goodness and unrelenting love. He cares about all of us that were left behind after this tragedy. I thank Him for giving me my husband, the love of my life and joy of my heart. I am thrilled to be adding to our family with him. Then, I remember. I think it’s ok to sit and think about those who have gone on before, because God gave us those times together and they are a blessing. And then finally, I must go on. The sun has come out and I have a day to live. This is a beautiful and terrible day, all at once. And I know, that in the end, it will be ok.

I have often asked myself why I would even want to join the world of blogs. After all, the internet is filled with blog site after blog site. The topics range from helpful and fun to downright disturbing. So, why am I joining the blogging world? I’m a linear thinker, so here is my short list of reasons:

1. My head is way too full of thoughts, ideas, and musings to not have a place to write it all down.

2. God has given me the privilege of being young, married, a new college grad, and pregnant while trying to raise support to serve as a missionary alongside my husband in an urban area. There’s plenty to write about with all that going on!

3. I am tired of reading everyone else’s blogs and not having my own!

4. Pregnancy has been amazing and has gone by way too fast. I am already at 23 weeks and promised myself at the beginning that I would write down what was happening so I would remember. Sadly, the journal entries are few and far between. I hope this helps me write more.

Well, there are a few reasons. They work for me, so I hope they work for you, too. Thanks for coming along on this journey with me. I have no idea what it will look like, but at least now we can enjoy it together.
